    Tolerance: Why Nominal Gauge Is Not a Guaranteed Thickness

    Sheet steel is sold to a mill tolerance, not to an exact number. Cold-rolled stainless typically carries a thickness tolerance on the order of ±0.05–0.08 mm depending on width and mill spec. That is normal and acceptable — an honest 18-gauge sheet can legitimately measure 1.15–1.25 mm. The problem is the supplier who treats that tolerance as a one-way door, sourcing sheet that sits permanently at the thin edge, or worse, quoting "18 gauge" while actually feeding 20-gauge sheet into the press.

    This is the single most common spec drift in low-cost stainless sink sourcing. Gauge is invisible on a finished, polished bowl. Two sinks can look identical in a catalog photo and differ by 0.3 mm of steel — which is the difference between a quiet rigid sink and one that flexes under a loaded dish rack. Because gauge is the easiest place to shave cost without changing the look, your contract has to name the millimetre value and your receiving has to verify it. Put the mm figure on the PO, not just the gauge word.

    How to Verify Actual Thickness on Receipt

    Do not measure at the rim or the flange. The folded edge, the rim roll and any reinforcement can read thicker than the body and will flatter a thin sink. Measure where it matters:

    1. Use a caliper or a thickness gauge at the bowl wall — the flat vertical side panel of the bowl, mid-height, away from any fold, weld or stiffening rib. Digital calipers reach over a cut edge; a magnetic/ultrasonic thickness gauge reads on an intact bowl.
    2. Check the bowl base separately. Some economy sinks deep-draw a single thinner sheet, so the base can read thinner than the walls after forming. Note both.
    3. Sample across the lot, not one piece. Pull units from different cartons and pallets. A consistent 1.2 mm across the sample confirms 18 ga; a spread that dips toward 0.9–1.0 mm signals 20-gauge sheet sold as 18.
    4. Compare against the contract mm value, allowing the mill tolerance above. A reading inside ±0.08 mm of nominal is fine; a reading a full gauge step low is a non-conformance.
