01 / AXIS

Long axis follows the counter

An oval reads quieter than a circle on a wide top. The long axis normally runs with the counter line rather than across it.

02 / SET OUT

Two lines to mark, not one

A circle only has to be centered once. An oval has to look centered left to right and front to back, so mark both lines before it is fixed.

Ask for the drain center to be dimensioned from both ends of the oval. A fabricator cannot place the waste hole from a single figure.

An oval edge comes straight out of the form. Small differences around the curve belong in the tolerance you agree, not in a rejection.

If a fabricator is cutting a matching top, give them the physical basin rather than the drawing alone. A cast edge is easier to trace than to calculate.

Put the agreed tolerance in writing before bulk production starts.
