Kitchen Faucet Low Water Pressure: Aerator, Hose, Supply Line and Cartridge Checks

    When a kitchen faucet suddenly starts running slowly, it is easy to assume the home has a water pressure problem. In many cases, though, the pressure is fine. The water flow is being restricted somewhere in or near the faucet.

    The quickest way to narrow it down is to check the parts in order: the aerator or spray head, the shutoff valves, the supply lines, the pull-down hose, and finally the cartridge.

    If several faucets or showers in the house are also weak, the problem is probably not limited to the kitchen faucet. That points more toward the main water supply, a pressure reducing valve, the water heater, or the plumbing system.

    Start by Comparing Hot and Cold Flow

    Before taking anything apart, spend a minute testing the faucet.

    Run the cold water by itself, then the hot water. After that, try mixed warm water and switch between stream and spray modes if the faucet has both.

    These simple comparisons often tell you where to look next.

    When only one kitchen faucet has low flow, a pressure gauge is rarely the first tool you need. Start with the parts you can see and access.

    Check the Aerator or Spray Head

    The aerator is one of the most common reasons a faucet loses flow. It sits at the end of the spout or inside the spray head, where small screens and openings can trap sediment, installation debris, and hard-water deposits.

    Purdue University recommends checking and cleaning faucet aerators when debris has collected inside them. Its plumbing maintenance guidance also notes that flushing the fixture can help clear loose material.

    To inspect the outlet:

    1. Cover the sink drain so small parts cannot fall into it.
    2. Remove the aerator or spray head according to the faucet instructions.
    3. Keep the washers, screens, and flow-control inserts in the order they came out.
    4. Rinse away loose debris.
    5. Aim the open spout or hose into the kitchen sink.
    6. Turn the faucet on slowly for a brief flow test.
    7. Reinstall the parts without overtightening them.

    If the flow is clearly stronger with the aerator or spray head removed, you have found the restriction.

    Not every spray head uses a standard threaded aerator. Some models have a recessed insert that requires a small removal key. Do not force it with pliers or a screwdriver if the design is unclear.

    What About Mineral Deposits?

    Hard water can leave a white or chalky buildup around the outlet openings. EPA WaterSense recommends checking faucets for scaling and using white vinegar or another appropriate cleaner when mineral buildup starts to affect flow. See its home-maintenance guidance.

    Only soak removable aerator components, and check that vinegar is safe for the material. Avoid soaking an entire plated spray head unless the manufacturer specifically allows it.

    Make Sure Both Shutoff Valves Are Open

    Under most kitchen sinks, one valve controls the hot water supply and another controls the cold water supply.

    A valve may have been left partially closed after installation, cleaning, or another repair. That can reduce flow even when the rest of the house has normal water pressure.

    Check both valves, but do not force one that is corroded, leaking, or difficult to move.

    Then test the faucet again.

    If the hot side is still weak but the cold side is normal, focus on the hot-side valve, supply line, or cartridge inlet. The same logic applies when only the cold side is affected.

    Weak hot water at several fixtures is a different issue. In that case, the water heater or hot-water plumbing may need attention.

    Look at the Supply Lines

    Follow the two supply lines from the shutoff valves to the faucet body.

    They should run in smooth curves without sharp bends or twisting. Check for:

    • A line pressed against the cabinet wall
    • Compression from stored items
    • A tight bend near a connection
    • Moisture or visible leaks
    • A line stretched too tightly

    A bent or crushed line can reduce water flow even when the shutoff valve is fully open.

    Reposition an undamaged line if possible. If it is leaking, flattened, or permanently kinked, replace it with the correct connection size and length.

    Do not disconnect a supply line until the water is turned off.

    Inspect the Pull-Down Hose

    On a pull-down faucet, weak flow can come from the retractable hose or the way it moves below the sink.

    Pull the spray head out and watch the hose while the water is running. Pay attention to whether the flow changes as the hose moves.

    Common problems include:

    • A kink beneath the sink
    • A twist near the spray-head connection
    • Contact with the drain assembly
    • Interference from supply lines
    • Cabinet items pressing against the hose
    • A hose weight installed in the wrong position

    When the water becomes stronger or weaker as the hose moves, routing is the first thing to correct.

    Also compare stream and spray settings. If one works normally and the other does not, the problem is more likely inside the spray head than in the home’s water supply.

    If the hose or spray assembly is damaged and the correct repair part is unavailable, review pull-down kitchen faucet configurations before choosing a replacement.

    Check the Cartridge Last

    The cartridge sits behind the faucet handle and controls both flow and temperature.

    It should not be the first part you remove. Check the aerator, spray head, shutoff valves, supply lines, and hose before opening the faucet body.

    The cartridge becomes a more likely cause when:

    • One temperature side stays weak
    • Flow remains low with the aerator or spray head removed
    • Debris entered the plumbing during installation or repair
    • The handle no longer mixes hot and cold water normally
    • All accessible hoses and lines look clear

    Cartridges are model-specific. Two parts may look similar but use different inlets, seals, or retaining systems.

    Should You Clean, Repair, or Replace the Faucet?

    The test results should guide the decision.

    Clean or Reposition a Part

    This is usually enough when:

    • The aerator contains loose debris
    • Mineral deposits can be removed safely
    • A hose or supply line is kinked but not damaged
    • A shutoff valve was not fully open

    Replace One Component

    A part replacement makes sense when:

    • The spray head remains restricted after cleaning
    • The hose is damaged, collapsed, or leaking
    • A supply line is crushed or leaking
    • The correct cartridge has been identified as the cause

    Replace the Faucet

    Consider a full faucet replacement when the correct repair part is no longer available, several components are worn, leaks continue after repair, or the low flow remains after all accessible restrictions have been checked.

    At that stage, kitchen faucet provides current configuration options.

    A new faucet may fix a worn or blocked fixture. It will not solve low water pressure caused by pipes, a water heater, a pressure reducing valve, or the main water supply.

    Why is only my kitchen faucet running slowly?

    When other fixtures have normal flow, the restriction is usually close to the kitchen faucet. The aerator, spray head, shutoff valves, supply lines, hose, and cartridge are the main areas to check.

    Can a clogged aerator reduce water flow?

    Yes. Sediment, debris, and hard-water deposits can block the small openings inside the aerator. If the faucet runs better after the aerator is removed, clean or replace that component.

    Why is spray mode weaker than stream mode?

    When stream mode is normal but spray mode is weak, the spray head is usually the better place to look. Debris may be blocking the spray outlets or an internal passage.

    Will a new kitchen faucet increase water pressure?

    It may improve flow if the old faucet has a restricted cartridge, damaged hose, or blocked internal passage. It will not correct a pressure problem elsewhere in the house.
