The 30-second answer. 8 in faucet hole spacing means the two outer holes in your bathroom sink sit 8 in (203 mm) apart, measured center to center. The sink deck carries three holes: hot handle, spout, cold handle. That hole configuration is called a widespread faucet, or 8 in centers. Each of the three holes is typically about 1-3/8 in (35 mm) across. Measure from the middle of the left hole to the middle of the right hole. Do not measure edge to edge, and do not measure to the middle hole. A 4 in centerset faucet will not cover an 8 in spread.

Hole spacing is the one number that decides whether a faucet drops straight into a bathroom sink. Get it wrong and the faucet arrives correct on paper and useless on site. Get it right first time and nobody has to re-drill a stone countertop. This page answers the spacing question first, then shows the data a factory actually needs from you. SANIKB manufactures bathroom faucets for importers, dealers, contractors and project buyers, so the figures below come off our own product records rather than a catalog someone else wrote.

What does 8 in faucet hole spacing mean?

8 in faucet hole spacing means the distance from the center of the hot handle hole to the center of the cold handle hole is 8 in (203 mm). The spout sits between them. So the bathroom sink has three holes in a straight line, and the outer two are 8 in apart.

A centerset sink gives you 4 in, and a single hole sink gives you one opening. The number describes the sink, not the faucet. A three hole sink on 8 in centers needs a three hole faucet built for 8 in centers. That faucet type is a widespread faucet.

How to measure center to center on a bathroom sink

You need a tape measure and two minutes. Do this before you buy a new faucet, not after.

    1. Find the two outer holes in the bathroom sink. Ignore the middle hole for now.
    2. Put the tape on the exact middle of the left hole.
    3. Read the exact middle of the right hole. That figure is your center to center spacing.
    4. Measure the width of one hole. Most pre drilled holes run about 1-3/8 in (35 mm).
    5. Measure how thick the sink deck is where the holes are. That decides whether the shanks reach through.

If you get roughly 8 in, you have an 8 in faucet hole spacing sink. If you get roughly 4 in, you have a centerset sink. A caliper reads the hole diameter more accurately than a tape, and fabricators prefer a caliper figure.

    What does "faucet centers" mean?

Centers is trade shorthand for center to center. It always measures hole middle to hole middle, never the gap between the holes and never the outside edges. You will also see it written as 8 in O.C., meaning on center.

What does faucet center 8 mean?

Faucet center 8 is the same spec written loosely. It means 8 in center to center across the two outer holes of a three hole sink. When a listing says 8 in centers, 8 in spread, or 8 faucet hole spacing, all three describe one layout.

What is the middle part of a faucet called?

The middle part is the spout. Its only function is to carry water. On a three hole faucet in widespread form, it is a separate unit with its own hole, and the hot and cold handles mount either side of it.

Hole configuration: how many faucet holes does your bathroom sink have?

Hole configuration means how many holes are drilled in the sink and how far apart they sit. Record it first, because the hole configuration dictates which faucet types will fit. Faucet hole sizes vary by sink and by faucet type, so count the holes, then measure the spread. The table below covers the four layouts you will meet.

Diagram comparing 8 in widespread, 4 in centerset and single hole bathroom faucet hole spacing, measured center to center

Faucet configuration Holes in the sink Center to center spread Hole diameter, typical Typical use
Widespread (8 in) 3 8 in (203 mm), outer hole to outer hole ~1-3/8 in (35 mm) Larger vanities, three hole sinks
    Centerset (4 in) 3 4 in (102 mm) ~1-3/8 in (35 mm) Compact vanities, 4 in basins
Single hole 1 Not applicable ~1-3/8 in (35 mm) Single hole basins, vessel basins, modern compact vanities
Undrilled or undermount 0 Set by the fabricator You specify it Stone and solid surface countertops

Bathroom faucets are bought by configuration first and by brand second. Once you know the hole configuration on the ware, the shortlist writes itself.

What is standard faucet hole spacing?

There is no single standard. Three faucet types cover almost every bathroom sink sold in North America: single hole, 4 in centerset, and 8 in widespread. Kitchen faucets add one, three and four hole layouts on the same logic.

If a supplier calls a bathroom sink faucet layout standard, ask which of the three. The word on its own is useless on a purchase order.

What's the difference between 4 and 8 faucet hole spacing?

Both use three holes. The difference is the spread and the way the faucet is built.

    • 4 in centerset. The outer holes are 4 in apart. A centerset faucet installs as a single unit, with the spout and both handles on one base plate.
    • 8 in widespread. The outer holes are 8 in apart. You get two handles and a spout, and a widespread faucet ships as three separate pieces that connect under the sink with flexible supply lines.

The two are not interchangeable. A centerset faucet on an 8 in sink leaves the outer holes exposed. A widespread faucet does not go on a 4 in sink either. Its two handle shanks are built for holes 8 in apart. On 4 in centers they have nowhere to land, and the valve bodies foul each other under the deck.

What does a 4-inch center set mean for a faucet?

It means the faucet is built for holes 4 in apart, center to center, and installs as one unit. Out of the carton you get a single piece rather than three.

What is the typical hole spacing for 4-inch faucets?

4 in (102 mm) center to center between the outer holes, with the spout hole centered between them. That figure is fixed. Unlike an 8 in widespread set, a centerset faucet gives you no adjustment.

Faucet types that fit 8 in faucet hole spacing

Three bathroom faucets fit a sink drilled on 8 in centers. Pick the right faucet for the job and the budget.

    • A widespread faucet. The correct answer. Widespread faucets ship as three pieces, with the hot and cold handles independent of the spout.
    • A single hole faucet with a wide deck plate. The single hole body drops into the middle hole. The escutcheon has to span the two outer holes, so check the plate length against 8 in before you buy.
    • Hole covers. Two chrome or black button plugs close the outer holes and leave the middle hole for a single hole faucet. Cheap, but it reads as a patch.

All three options mount from above the sink. A wall mounted faucet removes the question entirely, because the plumbing and the mounting hardware go into the wall instead of the sink. Our wall mount bathroom faucets are the usual answer on a vessel basin. A widespread layout also asks for more counter space either side of the basin than a centerset does, which is part of why widespread faucets read as the higher-end configuration.

Single hole faucets and deck plates

Single hole faucets need one hole, typically 1-3/8 in in diameter. Single hole faucets are the easiest fixtures to install, because there is one shank, one nut and one pair of plumbing supply lines. On a three hole sink they need a deck plate, and not every deck plate spans 8 in. Measure the plate, not the marketing photo.

    Can I use a 1 hole faucet on a 3 hole sink?

Yes, with a deck plate that covers the full spread. The single hole faucet mounts in the center hole and the plate hides the outer two. Without the plate you are left with two open holes either side of the spout.

Kitchen faucets, 60/40 sinks and oversized holes

Kitchen faucets follow the same rules with different numbers. On a 60/40 sink, put the faucet hole centered over the larger bowl, not over the divider, so the stream lands in the deeper bowl. If the opening is too big, a base plate or an oversized escutcheon covers it. If it is too small, a fabricator can drill it out with a diamond hole saw. Set the holes for a side sprayer or a soap dispenser at the same time, because a sprayer added later means drilling a finished countertop.

How far apart should widespread faucets be?

8 in (203 mm) is the nominal figure and the one to design around. Many widespread faucets connect through flexible hoses that tolerate an 8 to 16 in spread, and some go down to 6 in. That tolerance is why the format survives an imperfect drilling.

That range is not universal. Four of the five SANIKB widespread models publish 8 in centers on the product record. The fifth, FYF-01417, is published as a deck mounted 3 hole widespread with no centers figure. Ask us for its drawing before you order against a drilled top. Hose length is quoted against your measurements rather than assumed. Custom center to center positions are available on an OEM order, so a distributor with an unusual basin spec can have the fixtures built to the ware rather than forcing a fit. Compare the widespread bathroom faucets we already tool before you pay for a custom configuration.

Pre drilled holes: what to confirm before you order

Holes drilled at the factory save the fabricator a step, and cost you a return when they do not match. Confirm four things in writing.

    • Center to center spacing. 4 in, 8 in, or a measured figure if the ware is imported.
    • Hole diameter. Typically 1-3/8 in (35 mm). Widespread configurations in the field run roughly 1.25 to 1.5 in.
    • Deck thickness at the holes. Thick stone defeats shanks sized for a thin ceramic basin.
    • Obstructions underneath. Check for a backsplash, a wall or a cabinet rail before anyone drills.

Undermount sinks typically arrive with no pre drilled holes at all, which is the single most common surprise in a modern bathroom fit-out. The faucet holes go into the countertop instead, so the fabricator sets the spacing and you supply the mounting template.

Installation checks before the plumber arrives

Exploded view of a SANIKB widespread bathroom faucet showing the brass body, the ceramic disc cartridge and the supply hoses

Most faucet installation problems are measurement problems found too late. Run these checks before the plumbing fixtures leave the warehouse.

    • Confirm the faucet type matches the hole configuration drilled in the sink, and that the installation drawing matches the model code.
    • Confirm the supply lines reach the shut-off valves under the cabinet.
    • Confirm the deck plate, if the configuration needs one, spans the full 8 in.
    • Confirm the sink deck thickness against the shank length on the drawing.
    • Confirm the mounting hardware suits that thickness before the fixtures ship.
    • Read the installation instructions for shank length and typical spacing tolerance.

Install the widespread set in the order the drawing shows. A widespread set has two separate handles plus a spout, so the installation process has three alignment steps. A centerset faucet is a single unit, and its spacing is fixed at 4 in, so the install is one drop-in. Brass bodies are heavy, so support the body while you tighten the nuts. Replacing a cartridge later is easier on a widespread set, because each handle comes apart on its own. On ceramic, stone and quartz, let the fabricator drill to avoid cracking the basin. Install the spout first, then set the hot and cold handles to the drilling.

Snug the mounting nuts evenly and run the water before anyone closes the cabinet. Check for leaks at both plumbing connections under full line pressure, then wipe the deck dry so a slow weep shows up straight away. On a widespread set, test both handles, because each one has its own valve.

8 faucet hole spacing on undrilled countertops

When nothing is pre drilled, you choose the faucet first and drill to it. Give the fabricator three numbers when you release the plumbing rough-in: the center to center spread, the hole diameter, and the tolerance you accept on hole placement.

Ask for that tolerance in writing. On a widespread set the two outer holes have to line up with two independent valve bodies, and a hole that wanders shows up as a handle sitting crooked next to the spout. Installation clearance matters too. Leave enough room that the hot and cold handles do not crowd the spout or the backsplash.

Real widespread faucet specs from our factory

The table below lists live SANIKB models with the figures published on their product records. Hole centers and overall width are two different numbers. FYF-01303 publishes both: 8 in (203 mm) centers and an overall width of 14.4 in (365 mm). The centers are the drilling. The overall width is how much deck the trim covers. A vanity drilled on 8 in centers can still be too narrow for a 14.4 in set, so check the deck width as well as the spacing.

How the minimum actually works. Each model carries a published per-model minimum on its product page. In practice the working floor is one 20ft container, and you can mix models and finishes to fill it. If you already use a freight forwarder in China, we can release smaller quantities into your consolidation — send us their details with your model list.

Lead time runs 30 to 45 days and the clock starts after sample approval, so put the sampling round in your schedule as well. Every SANIKB model in this range is recorded as brass, and every model carries a drawing against its model code. Ask for the drawing and drill to that, not to a web listing.

Chrome Curved-Spout Widespread Bathroom Faucet, Dual Lever Handles

Matte black and other finishes on one faucet configuration

Finish is where a faucet configuration meets a design palette. On FYF-01003 each finish carries its own code: FYF-01003CR for chrome, FYF-01003LH for gun metal grey, FYF-01003BK for matte black. One drawing covers all three, so the drilling never changes when the finish does. F309001 runs in chrome, brushed nickel, brushed gold and matte black. F305201 runs in brushed gold only. FYF-01303 runs polished gold (FYF-01303GD) and matte black (FYF-01303BK), so the code carries the finish there too.

Lock the features you care about on the first purchase order: spout height, handle style and finish code. Order against codes, not color names in an email. Black in particular means four different things to four suppliers. Our guide to faucet finishes for wholesale buyers sets out how each finish behaves under commercial cleaning.

One detail specific to three piece fixtures: the spout and both handles are plated as separate castings. A credible factory batches and inspects the three components together, so they read as one finish in the box.

Buying a new faucet: what to put on the purchase order

A new faucet order that skips the measurements is a guess. These are the fields we ask every buyer for, and they are printed on each product page.

    • Quantity per finish code
    • Hole centers on the ware
    • Deck thickness where the holes sit
    • Supply hose length and thread
    • Destination market, port and incoterm

Get these five right and the bathroom faucets arrive ready to install. Get them wrong and you pay for it in returns and site delay. Send the list and a quote comes back within 12 business hours, by email or WhatsApp. Skip it and the first reply is a list of questions instead.

Code and label questions on bathroom faucets

Three things decide what bathroom faucets may claim in North America, and none of them concern hole spacing. Check them before you install a single unit.

    • Water efficiency. A typical bathroom sink faucet has to deliver no more than 1.5 gpm at 60 psi to carry the label. The EPA WaterSense specification for bathroom faucets is the source to quote.
    • Accessibility. On commercial and multifamily work, faucet controls must function without tight grasping or twisting. The 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design set the rule, and lever handles are the usual answer.
    • Lead content. United States rules cap lead at 0.25 percent across the wetted surfaces of a faucet. Ask for the lead-free test report against the exact model code.
    • Listing. A cUPC mark means IAPMO listed that exact model to the faucet standard ASME A112.18.1 / CSA B125.1. Verify the model number yourself in the IAPMO product listing directory rather than accepting a general claim.

SANIKB quotes marking and documents against the destination market you name on the enquiry. Where a model carries no scheme on its record, we say so rather than implying one.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the standard hole spacing for a widespread bathroom faucet?

A widespread faucet uses three separate deck holes (each roughly 35 mm / 1-3/8 inch in diameter) with an adjustable outer-to-outer spread. 8 in (203 mm) is the nominal size — the trade calls it 8 in centers — and most models accommodate roughly 6–16 in (152–406 mm). Confirm the exact working range per model, because it varies by platform.

Can a widespread faucet replace a 4-inch centerset?

Not directly. A centerset is a fixed 4-inch (about 102 mm) three-hole layout on a single base plate, while a widespread mounts as three independent pieces across a wider, adjustable spread. The two are not interchangeable without re-drilling or a matching deck plate, so always capture the existing basin drilling first. If the deck is already drilled on 4 in centers, the options are a centerset or a single-hole faucet with a deck plate — not an 8 in widespread.

What is the MOQ and lead time for a wholesale order?

The product pages publish 100 pcs per model. In practice the floor is one 20ft container that you can mix across models and finishes, and if you already use a freight forwarder in China we can release smaller quantities into your consolidation. Lead times depend on model, finish and whether the order is private-label. Send your target models and destination market and we will return current lead times with your quote.

Do you offer OEM / private-label widespread faucets?

Yes. You can run a catalog model as-is or specify finishes, handle styling, packaging and branding for a private-label program on the same solid-brass platform. See our OEM and private-label manufacturing guide for the full process.

    Which certifications can you support?

For the US and Canada, three things decide a basin faucet. The cUPC listing, which means IAPMO listed it to the faucet standard ASME A112.18.1/CSA B125.1. The lead-free test, NSF/ANSI/CAN 372. And on bathroom faucets, a flow rate of 1.5 gpm at 60 psi if the job wants WaterSense. We confirm which ones each model has before you place the PO.

Can I get the same finish across widespread, centerset and single-hole formats?

Yes — carrying one finish across all three formats from a single brass line is exactly how buyers keep a bath program visually consistent. Request a finish-matched set when you send your model list.

Can I put an 8 in widespread faucet on a 4 in centerset sink?

No. A widespread set needs its outer holes 8 in apart, and a centerset sink gives you 4 in. The set will not fit, because of mounting hole misalignment: the two handle shanks have nowhere to land. Your options are a centerset faucet, a single hole faucet with a deck plate, or re-drilling the sink. Re-drilling is only realistic on stone or solid surface, and a fabricator should do it, not an installer on site.

My faucet hole is too big. What can I do?

Cover it or fill it. An oversized escutcheon or a base plate hides a hole that has been drilled wide, and most single hole faucets ship with one. If the hole is only slightly over 1-3/8 in, a mounting washer with a larger footprint usually seats fine. For badly oversized holes in stone, a fabricator can bond in a plug and re-drill, but replacing the countertop is often cheaper. If you are stocking, carrying a base plate as a line item solves most of these calls before they become returns.

Where should I place the faucet hole on a 60/40 sink?

Center the faucet hole over the larger bowl, not over the divider. That keeps the spout above the basin you actually fill, and keeps the stream off the divider ridge. On a kitchen sink, allow enough reach that the outlet clears the bowl edge by an inch or more. If you are adding a side sprayer or a soap dispenser, set those holes at the same time. For project supply, send the fabricator the faucet template with the sink so the stone is drilled once.

Do undermount sinks come with pre drilled holes?

Usually not. An undermount sink has no deck of its own, so the faucet holes go into the countertop above it. That puts the spacing decision on the fabricator, and it means you must supply the faucet model or its template before the stone is drilled. Choose the faucet first, then release the countertop for drilling.
